About The Salon
Salon Roi is a beautifully restored four story historic townhouse, within walking distance of two major Washington hotels (Omni Shorham and Marriot Wardman Park). The Salon is near the intersection of Calvert Street and Connecticut Avenue in Northwest Washington’s WoodleyPark (two blocks from the Washington National Zoo) and one second from the Woodley Park Zoo/Adams Morgan metro station.
Salon Roi is known to many Washingtonians as the site of the mural of legendary film star Marilyn Monroe, which graces the upper levels of the Salon’s southern exterior wall and was created by artist John Bailey in 1980 for Mr. Roi Barnard’s 40th birthday. The mural has become something of Washington landmark, reproduced in paintings, T-shirts, calendars and postcards. It is even a stop on the route of the Old Towne Trolley, a roving tour bus. Salon Roi was the first full-service unisex salon in Washington, and has remained at its original location since 1968. In 1981, Salon Roi was named “Best Salon” by Washingtonian Magazine. In subsequent years, Salon Roi has continued to grow, retain existing clients, and attract new clients of all ages. At Salon Roi our mission is to create an environment where your every need is anticipated, a place where you feel so welcome that you may never want to leave. Our warm interior adds to this atmosphere.
While here, enjoy a unique collection of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia throughout the salon and spa. Warm yourself in winter time by our fireplace with a hot tea or coffee by your side. We offer exceptional hair and spa services that leave you feeling satisfied, pampered, and recharged. Our expert stylists can provide any hair style and color you want and our hair extension service can add instant creativity and glamour to your style. The spa also offers massages, manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing, lash extensions, makeup artistry, and permanent makeup.
At Salon Roi our experienced and certified professionals will provide you with proven results and complete satisfaction on any occasion. If you have long hair and wish to donate we will offer 20 percent off hair services in return and we will ship the hair. Contact us for more information.

Originally named Charles the First, Salon Roi opened its doors in 1969 and became the District’s first unisex salon. Opened by partners Roi Bernard and Charles Stinson, Charles the First became a D.C. landmark and the choice for many well known Washingtonians such as Connie Chung, Diana McClellan, Rudy Maze and more. The salon became a D.C. landmark when Charles commissioned John Bailey to paint a mural of Marilyn Monroe on the southern facing wall in 1981 for Roi’s 40th birthday. The mural can be seen today from the corner of Connecticut Ave. and Calvert St.
In the early 1980’s Roi became the sole owner of Charles the First and changed the name to Salon Roi. In 2007, Roi went into semi-retirement and sold the salon to current owner Daiva Kasteckaite, but still works three days a week for his clients, some of whom have been coming to him for a trim, cut or color for over 40 years.
Daiva, a certified esthetician and trained nurse has expanded the salon to include a myriad spa treatments offering facials, massages, body treatments, wraps, nail services, threading, waxing, lash/eyebrow tinting, wedding and special occasion make-up, hair styling and up-dos, ear candling, permanent makeup, and more, as well as continuing Salon Roi’s tradition of offering quality hair services to its clientele. Salon Roi is proud to help local and national charities such as CSAAC, locks of love and more, and enjoys being part of the vibrant Woodley Park neighborhood. Located in a historic four story town house in the heart of northwest D.C., Salon Roi is a two minute walk from the Woodley Park metro stop, circulator stop, the Omni Shorham Hotel as well as the Washington Marriot Warden Park, and works hard to maintain its friendly atmosphere and quality services.
